What does tackifier resin do in each PSA system?
The Pressure Sensitive Tape Council defines a PSA as permanently tacky at room temperature and able to adhere with light pressure, without activation by water, solvent or heat.1 Solvent, heat or water may be used to manufacture and coat it; the finished adhesive remains pressure-sensitive after the carrier is removed or the melt cools.

Choosing resin for SIS and SBS hot-melt PSA
SIS: C5 aliphatic resin has strong affinity for the polyisoprene midblock and is widely used to build fast tack and peel. Published research found complete compatibility in one studied SIS/C5 system; the exact polymer and resin still govern.2
SBS: Straight C5 may work, but SBS presents a different compatibility problem. Screen aromatic-modified C5 or C5/C9 when straight C5 causes haze, separation, low tack or poor shear balance. Research confirms strong resin–rubber interaction effects.3
Hydrogenated resin: Hydrogenation reduces unsaturation, improving color plus resistance to heat, oxidation and UV degradation.4 A compatible hydrogenated C5 or cycloaliphatic resin is therefore useful for clear labels, light-colored tape and products exposed to demanding aging conditions. Hydrogenation does not guarantee compatibility, tack or heat resistance in the finished formula.
Liquid resin: This is a low-softening or room-temperature-flowing resin, not simply process oil. It can extend low-temperature tack, but excess may reduce holding power, cause ooze or leave residue. Screen the complete solid-resin/oil balance.
Balancing initial tack, peel and shear
Initial tack measures grip under light contact. Peel is the force per unit width needed to remove applied tape. Shear is resistance to sliding under a parallel static load.1 Improving one can weaken another.

Softening point is a screening variable, not a service-temperature rating. Higher-softening resins can support cohesion; lower-softening resins generally favor wetting, tack and peel.4 Compatibility and block selectivity matter just as much because resin entering styrenic domains can disturb shear-supporting physical crosslinks.
The Dahlquist criterion is often cited as requiring an elastic modulus below roughly 3 × 10^5 Pa for room-temperature pressure sensitivity.5 This rule of thumb is not a specification. Confirm tack, peel, static shear, failure mode and aging on the actual construction and substrate.
